Overview

We built Copycat around a single principle: your clipboard is none of our business. Everything you copy stays on your Mac, encrypted at rest, and is never sent anywhere. This policy explains what little data we do and don't handle — and why.

What Copycat stores

Copycat reads text from your clipboard and stores it locally on your Mac as your clipboard history. That's it. This data:

  • Lives only on your device — it is never uploaded, synced, or transmitted anywhere.
  • Is encrypted at rest using AES-GCM. The encryption key is stored in the macOS Keychain and never leaves your device.
  • Stays under your full control at all times. You can clear your history from within the app.

What Copycat never collects

Copycat contains no analytics SDKs, no telemetry, no crash reporters, and no network calls. Specifically, we never collect:

  • Your clipboard contents — they never leave your device.
  • Usage data, events, or behavioral analytics.
  • Device identifiers, IP addresses, or location data.
  • Cookies of any kind.
  • Payment information — we never see your card or billing details (see below).

This is a guarantee about the Copycat macOS app/binary itself, and it is unaffected by anything described in “Website analytics” below — the app and the meetcopycat.com website are separate, and the app remains fully tracking-free regardless of what the website does.

Sensitive data is automatically skipped

With Skip sensitive content on (the default), Copycat ignores clipboard items from supported password managers and apps that mark their pasteboard content as concealed or sensitive. These items are never recorded, never stored, and never shown in your history.

App Store & payments

Copycat is sold exclusively through the Apple Mac App Store. All purchases are processed by Apple Inc. under Apple's own privacy policy and terms. Solco, LLC does not receive, store, or process your payment data at any point. For billing questions or refund requests, please contact Apple Support directly.

Website analytics

This website (meetcopycat.com) may use cookies and similar tracking technologies for advertising attribution and aggregate analytics — separately from the Copycat app described above, which has zero tracking of any kind (see “What Copycat never collects”). Tracking categories this site may use:

  • Meta Pixel — a first-party cookie set by meetcopycat.com and a third-party cookie set by Meta, used to measure ad performance and attribute App Store visits to ad campaigns.
  • Google Ads conversion tag — a first-party cookie set by meetcopycat.com and a third-party cookie set by Google, used to measure ad performance and attribute App Store visits to ad campaigns. It records a conversion when you click a Mac App Store button, unless you have clicked Reject.
  • Google Tag Manager — a container that loads the tags this site's owner configures in it (currently Google Analytics and the Google Ads conversion tag). Tag Manager itself does not set cookies; the tags it loads may.
  • Google Analytics (via Google Tag Manager) — aggregate, non-advertising web analytics such as page views and link clicks, used to understand how this site is used. It sets first-party cookies on meetcopycat.com and sends usage data to Google's analytics servers.

A cookie-consent banner appears on your first visit to any page on this site. The Meta Pixel sets no cookies and sends no events until you click Accept. You can change your choice at any time using the “Cookie Preferences” link in the site footer.

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, Google Tag Manager and Google's other tags run in Google Consent Mode with advertising and analytics storage denied until you accept. In that mode they set no cookies, though they may still send limited, cookie-free signals to Google, such as that a page was loaded.

Everywhere else, Google's tags start with advertising and analytics storage allowed and may set cookies before you make a choice. They switch to denied as soon as you click Reject, or from your first page load if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal.

Encryption

All clipboard history is encrypted at rest on your Mac using AES-GCM (256-bit). The encryption key is generated on your device and stored in the macOS Keychain. It never leaves your device, and we have no way to access or decrypt your history.

Data retention & deletion

Copycat keeps your 1,000 most recent clips on your Mac; older clips are deleted automatically. You can also set History retention in Copycat's Settings to delete clips older than 1 hour, 7 days, 30 days, or 6 months (the default is Never). Clear History in Settings deletes your whole history at any time.

Moving Copycat to the Trash does not delete its data. macOS keeps the app's sandbox folder, which holds your encrypted history and settings, and the encryption key stays in your login keychain. Without that key, the history can't be read. To remove everything:

  1. Quit Copycat and move it to the Trash.
  2. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder, enter ~/Library/Containers, and move the folder named Copycat (com.solco.copycat) to the Trash.
  3. Open Keychain Access, search for com.copycat.app, and delete that item.

Because your data never leaves your device, there is nothing for us to delete on our end — you are always in full control.

Your rights

Because all your data is stored locally on your device and we have no access to it, you already have full control — there's no server-side data for us to provide, correct, or delete on your behalf. If you have questions about data generated through contact with us (e.g., a support email), you may request access, correction, or deletion by contacting us at the address below. We respond within 30 days.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of Copycat after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
